Shot List

These are scans of my shot lists, these provide the infomation for each shot. The list contains the timings for the shot and the location of each of them. My Shot lists do not contain a shot for every second of my video. this is because shot will be used again in the video but I have put in the last shot because it will only be used once.

Ancillary Task 2 - Album Advert

This is one of my album advert designs, I took some inspiration from a Biffy Clyro album poster. I included some infomation about the album realease data and the formats it would be avalible on. Also the bands name is mirrored on both sides of the poster, this represents the
theme of the video. Also the band is in some of the clothing that they are wearing in the video. I used a varity of colour, brightness and contrast filters over the top of the photo to give the phot a warm glow.

This is my second advert idea, again the band members are back to back to carry the theme from the video to the advert. By using a high contrast and brightness setting I managed to pulled the colour of hte leafs out. I added the bands website to the advert so that if the veiwer wanted to find out more about the band. Also I added a picture of the album cover to the advert, one thing I don't like about this version is the picture of the ablum, it looks out of place.

Final Advert Design
I have chosen this design because it clearly represents the theme throughout my music video and the album. Also I made a few adjsuments and added a few layer to the cover. Because the band is new, I have added the statement "Their Debut Album " Also because the main song on the album is Ignorance I have also put on there "Featuring the Song Ignorance". The record companies logos have been added to the advert in the bottom right hand corner.

DigiPak Development and Finished Design

I took a series of images to use on my digipak, the idea for the shots was too have the two artists represented by their guitars hanging from a tree. Also because of the genre of the music I have followed the conventions of the genre and have been experimenting with different photo filters. On both of the digipaks I have created, I have used the same track list. The tracks on the album are;
  1. Breakdown
  2. A-Team
  3. Ignorance ( The track I used for my music video)
  4. Keep Your Head Up
  5. You Need Me
  6. America
  7. Mardy Bum
  8. Little Miss Pipedream

Trial 1 :
This album cover uses a warm photo filter to give the photos a orange glow, also I have increased the brightness and contrast levels on the photos to bring out colours. All these adjustments are to fit the conventions of my chosen genre.

Also on the back of the digipak I have added the copyright statements this is includes the record and distribution copyrights and their dates. There is a bar code on the back which shows where a real bar code would be placed.

Trial 2:

In this digipak I have included the band members in the photos, I have tried to keep the continuity of the video through the the digipak. Also insted of using a warm photo filter I have just brightend the photos and increased the contrast to balance the photo. This digipack still contains the same deatils and tracklist as the other one. The major thing I have done is flip the side images of the arch way, this again follows the contnuity of the music video.

My Chosen Final Design

I have chosen this design over the other because it fits better with the theme of the song the music video. the next step is create a physical version.

Ancillary Task 1 - DigiPak Style Deconstructions

The Wikipedia definition of a Digipak is;

"Digipaks typically consist of a gate fold (book-style) paperboard or card stock outer binding, with one or more plastic trays capable of holding a CD or DVD attached to the inside."

Other features of a Digipak are a booklet that contain all of the lyrics of the songs and the credits of the songs on the album.

There are many styles of Digipak available, these consist of:

This is a 4 Panel Digipak, It features 4 full colour panels, a plastic CD Tray. Also it is still the same size as a normal Jewel case.

Once again this a 4 panel case but also features a pocket to hold a booklet that can contain the lyrics and credits to the songs on the album or single.

The 6 panel digipak allows for either more artwork or lyrics and credits to be shown. By adding a booklet limited edition pictures, lyrics, credits and band statements to be shown.

This is a 8 panel digipak it allows the designer to add more pictures or one continuous picture to wrap the whole thing. it also allows for some lyrics to be shown on the inside of the album.

By adding more then one disc, special addition songs and commentaries can be added or even a band DVD to the album.

 Summary

All of styles of digipak are designed to add something extra to the album, some add special artwork throughout the album, some have an added booklet containing song lyrics and credits. Also the incorporation of the disc into the design makes the whole album one of a kind.

Surveys - Results

I has been two weeks since I posted my surveys and since then I have posted links on social netwroking sites such as Twitter and Facebook. but unforunatly not many people have done them, because of the lack of data from the surveys, due the lack of people that did them, the data does not give a clear picture of my target audience.

But after some research of groups and forums arond my chosen genre, I have found that the my audience are teenagers from 14 to 19 years old. This is mainly because of punk / rock fashion and culture that are in their day to day lives. I have also found that they mainly listen to bands such as You Me At Six and Evenesance.

Opening shot test

I used some stock footage I had to edit together an opening sequence. I used footage I filmed at home and also when I was doing me shot testing.

When I come to edit my real video I can use this style of editing with in it. Also I have this clip as a reference for when i starting the editing process.

Lighting Test

I experimented with different uses of lighting, I did this in a dance studio which gives me white walls that reflect the light back into the shot. For the lighting I used green screen lights which create a diffused white light.

I placed the two main instruments and a stand in actor to see how the light would effect the shots of them.

From this I have found I will need more lights to flood the shot and create the desired brightness, also to increase the whiteness of the shot, in editing I could change the white balance or contrast.

Equipment

To create the varity of shots I will need, I am going to use a collection different equipment. Such as the obvious Camera I will also use a tripod, tracking dolly and fig rig.

Also I will need to use a set of lighting to light the shots correctly, to edit the shot i film i will need a computer running either of the editing programs Pinical or Serif Movieplus X5.

A Computer running the Serif MoviePlus X5
A Computer running Pinical Studio
Tracking Dolly is able to folded up for maximum portability
Tripod to mount the camera
Tripod Mounted on the Tracking Dolly

Shot Testing - Intruments and Singer

I decided I need to try out different shot that i could use with the band and their instuments. This ment i had to collect all of the insturment that I was going to use in the video and use a model to start playing them.

I filmed a varity of differnt shot for all of the instruments including the microphone for the singer. The results of  the this is below.

My Choosen Music Video

My chosen genre is rock, but instead of going for a really heavy rock song I have chosen and acoustic version of a song by paramore called Ignorance. The song features a singer playing guitar and another backing guitar.

Lyrics

If I'm a bad person, you don't like me
Well, I guess I'll make my own way
It's a circle, a mean cycle
I can't excite you anymore

Where's your gavel? Your jury?
What's my offense this time?
You're not a judge but if you're gonna judge me
Well, sentence me to another life

Don't wanna hear your sad songs
I don't wanna feel your pain
When you swear it's all my fault
'Cause you know we're not the same
No, we're not the same, oh, we're not the same

We're the friends who stuck together
We wrote our names in blood
But I guess you can't accept that the change is good
It's good, it's good

Well, you treat me just like another stranger
Well, it's nice to meet you, sir
I guess I'll go, I best be on my way out

You treat me just like another stranger
Well, it's nice to meet you, sir
I guess I'll go, I best be on my way out

Ignorance is your new best friend
Ignorance is your new best friend

This is the best thing that could've happened
Any longer and I wouldn't have made it
It's not a war, no, it's not a rapture
I'm just a person but you can't take it

The same tricks that, that once fooled me
They won't get you anywhere
I'm not the same kid from your memory
Well, now I can fend for myself

Don't wanna hear your sad songs
I don't wanna feel your pain
When you swear it's all my fault
'Cause you know we're not the same
No, we're not the same, oh, we're not the same

Yeah, we used to stick together
We wrote our names in blood
But I guess you can't accept that the change is good
It's good, it's good

Well, you treat me just like another stranger
Well, it's nice to meet you, sir
Well, I guess I'll go, I best be on my way out

You treat me just like another stranger
Well, it's nice to meet you, sir
Well, I guess I'll go, I best be on my way out

Ignorance is your new best friend
Ignorance is your new best friend
Ignorance is your new best friend
Ignorance is your new best friend

Well, you treat me just like another stranger
Well, it's nice to meet you, sir
Well, I guess I'll go, I best be on my way out

You treat me just like another stranger
Well, it's nice to meet you, sir
I guess I'll go, I best be on my way out

Animation Workshop

On the 21st June we took part in a animation workshop, the workshop was run by Mark Charlton who is a professional animator. During the work shop we looked at different styles of stop motion animation, these were painting animation, cut-out, 3D, whiteboard and pixelisation.
Mark Charlton has created many animated music videos, such as Golden Thread by Passenger and Snake by Frightend Rabbit.

We also had a go our selfs with all the differnt types of animation

Olly Murs - Dance With Me Tonight

The Camera is mounted on the side of the car bonnet to look at the singer through the windsheild, The shot is lit by natrual light.

The camera is mounted on the pavement opposite the actor, the camera is focused on him so as the car drives in it is blured. Also the costumes are of current styling to make him seem like an everyday person.

The video use still images played one after enother to show an event, the shots have an instrgramic effect over them

Focusing on the actions of the singer by having a close up of a body part such as his hand can explain an action.

Camo and Krooked - Cross The Line

A tracking - closeup shot of objects in the setting of part of video opens, this is a visual metaphor that describes the style of the music playing. the shot is naturaly lit.

The singer is introduced by a panning shot of a distant hill, only the back of her head and shoulders is shown to build suspence of who it is. Once again the shot is naturally lit.

The video contains a mix of the artists performing live and the signer at different locations. This fits the conventions of the genre.

As the music builds to the climax the video cuts rapidly between diffrent filterso the same shot, this disorintates the audience.

Paolo Nutini - Candy

Using many different layers of the objects in shot and focusing the camera on the mid-range props, gives hte effect of bluring the fore and background. Also a filter is placed over the top of the shot to give a instergramic camera effect.

By placing the light scource in front of the characters it makes the backs of the characters appear like silhouettes, also the focal point of the camera is the two main characters which blurs the background and the people out side.

Using a wide angle lens to capture all of the people in the shot and also the effect of heat rising to blur the people and the background of the shot. the shot is naturally lit. the costumes are of a summer formal dress design.

The Costume that singer is wearing also follows the theme of summer but is a bit more relaxed of the formal side. The camera is focused on him and blurs the background. Also the light is from the left side of the camera and illuminates the singer.

The Script - The Man Who Cant be Moved

Using natural light to create the shadow of the lead signer entering the shot can express his importance. it also silhouettes the legs of the singer. The shot is done by a tracking dolly, which gives a smooth shot.

Using a high contrast for the shot makes the light from the shot surrounding natural light appear bright white, again with the lead singer at the front of the band signifies his importance.

Close up of the instruments makes the audience listen closer to the tune that is being played. Also it injects a energy into the music because of the effort of playing by the guitarist.

Cutting back to the story being told in the video makes the audience relate the lyrics to the actions being acted out. the acting is usaly being done by the lead singer.

A close up of the singer gives the audince a idea of hte singers emotions also the again they use a high contrast.

Yashin - New Year New York

The establishing shot is a tracking shot across the front of a building the music is silent and also the natural lighting is dim which gives the impression of early morning. The shot is light by natural light and a gradient filter is put on the camera.

The close up on the feet is the start of the introduction of the band to the audience, using mist and a single direction of lighting shows that they have travelled from somewhere and are now at their destination.

Using a low angle shot and a wide angle lens makes the singers lyrics more important by making the audience feel as if he is singing down on them. Also the shot uses a single point light source to illuminate the singer.

The band is positioned with the lead and backing singer at the front of the band, with the lead guitarist and the bassist just behind them and the drummer. Also the Speakers are placed in shot to look as if they are playing the song live.

The Shot contains two sources of light one of which is in shot, this shot has a flare filter overlaid to flare the lights and create the line of light across the shot.

Deadmau5 - The Veldt

This Music uses Silhouette animation, this allows for little detail but a big impact, this basic out line is enough to connect the audience to the characters actions. The use of only two colours but different graidients keeps the scene simple.

The film is shot in a sidescroller theme, this means that all of the shots are on the same plane, this allows the shot to be layered very simply but effectivly, the shots used are as if it was being filmed on a real camera. This shot is a wide angle long shot, it is backlit and the character are in silhouette.

The Use of differnet focul points within the shot expresses the depth to the audience, the animals movment are very fluid but are also look as if they have been cut out, these movements are in sync with the beat of the music, an example of this is the movment of the birds wings is in sync wit hte bass beat of the song.

Using a mid-shot focuses the audience attention onto the animals movments, again the scene is backlit and produces a silhoette of the animal. The use of different shades of colour outlines the detail of the animal and still keeps it a silhoette.

The movment of the characters is on every other beat of the music so that it fits the motion of walking, yet the motion is still of a cartoon nature. The characters are one boy and one girl, the genders of the characters are expressed by the clothing and the way in which they act.

This is the establishing shot of the music video, the use of a long shot captures the door opening and the two main characters. the door opening and the colour bursting out suggests that it is the start of a jorney and the song.

Skillex - Make It Bun Dem

The zoom out from the character emphasises the realisation of an event behind the camera, this is also an establishing shot. Keeping the character in the centre of the shot focuses the audiences attention on him.

The egle is kept in the forground and the camera moves around it, also the background is out of focus. The movement through out hte shot is slow and smooth as if you where passing through the scene.

The use of the close up shot denotes the actions and reactions of the characters throughout the video. The shot is naturly lighted.
